zoe de leon – 3 ideas

04/27 W UPDATE

1. Which idea are you are going to go forward with? inspired by the DIY style of 70s punk zine culture and the tactility of scrapbooks and handwritten notes, i am creating a long form digital zine on instagram. the zine attempts to explore how to recreate the tactile, grainy, personal feel of scrapbooks, handwritten notes, and paper while incorporating digitally developed elements such as screenshots, iPhone images, and Adobe software. Content will include experimental data vizs of friends, silly instruction manuals, email letters, screenshot quotes.

2. What is your project plan?

04/27 – list and plan my first 4 pages

weekend – start making the 4 pages. these will likely be the experimental portraits of friends. brainstorm other concepts i want to develop –> consider video as platform?

5/2 – have 4 pages done. begin planning and finalizing concepts for the next pages. plan out the order of posting.

5/4 – work on the remaining pages.

weekend – keep working on remaining pages. start posting slowly over the weekend til the due date.

5/9 – have all pages posted and up.

3. What can you show us by Next Monday 5/2? My end goal is a minimum of 10 pages. By Monday I hope to have 4-5 final pages.

Some visual pegs pulled from the Internet:

capture subject: experimental event

capture technique: mixed media: data viz, instructions, screenshots, snap filters

platform for release: instagram account

inspired by the DIY feel of zines, i want to create a long form “zine” wherein each “page” is an instagram post. i am interested in the increasingly digitization of real world experience. to this end, digitizing the zine/scrapbook/handwritten/glue-y feel and how to recreate that experience not only without the tactility, but also while making use of largely tech-developed content (e.g screenshots, pics taken with snap filters).

the theme i am leaning towards is: how to be a person. the zine will be a mix of found and my own images in the collage visual aesthetic of a zine, and playfully incorporate elements i really enjoyed experimenting in class specifically data visualizations, tutorials as a medium in itself, and screenshots. (e.g data-fying portraits of friends, meme-ing memories, etc.)

i was inspired by:

– giorgia lupi’s data humanism work (her 2020 NYT data set specifically)

– the diary-esque style of 2013 tumblr accounts where reblogged images and texts jumbled with intensely personal content

2 other ideas:

capture subject: experimental portrait

capture technique: data visualization

platform: not sure – pdf?

inspired by giorgia lupi’s work, i want to create multiple data vizualizations over multiple days on “mundane” things. e.g charting hours spent on gmail, cute dogs seen, timeline of study hours, etc. My goal is to figure out creative ways to visualize and quantify everyday occurrences, essentially treating this as a dataset diary.

capture subject: experimental landscape

capture technique: google maps

platform: figma

inspired by our first ever unit project ‘landscape photography from bed’, i want to create an interactive map that creates a personalized google maps for specific locations.
