UNIT 3 Speed Project #1: Manipulating Time

*documentation for this speed project is due Monday 4/6*

Prompt: Stage an event and reveal otherwise unseen details through the manipulation of time

ROLLIN LEONARD – highlike
Crash Kiss by Rollin Leonard

Stage and capture an event that is designed to be seen through and appreciated through one of the following capture techniques:
– reversing a video
-slowing down a video
-speeding up a video
-capturing a video in slow mo
-capturing a time lapse

This prompt is about coming up with a compelling idea for your video as much as it is about experimental video editing. Video editing is about crafting a story, holding attention and guiding the audience’s focus. How can you use the tools above to direct a viewers focus to something you want them to experience? Feel free to review the class notes for inspiration if needed. Here are some directions you can take this in:

OPTION 1: Capture an object/ DIY Commercial shoot:

Think about how time lapse and slow mo are used in commercial video shoots. Using your phone and materials you have around you to make a commercial for something you own. Leverage techniques like slow mo, spray bottles, mirrors, and backdrops to capture that object doing something, and give it a polished feel. Check out the link below for inspo:

OPTION 2: Examine Virality/ Create an Illusion:

Think about how techniques like reversing a video, or speeding a video up after it has been captured can manipulate a viewers understanding of an event. Use those techniques to stage an event that seems so improbable, absurd, engaging, or funny that a viewer is compelled to send it to their friends. Extra points if you put your video on a platform like tiktok or youtube! See videos below for inspo

OPTION 3: Experimental Filmmaking/ Tell a Unique story:

Being able to manipulate time gives you unprecedented control over the capturing and retelling of an event. Use techniques like time lapse or changing the speed of playback to tell a story about an event in a unique way. You can use time to change events happening in the world around you, or you can stage a performance that comes to life once the video has been edited. See the videos below for inspo:

TOOLS

You can use your phone’s native slow mo and time lapse settings to film. You can also edit “normal” video footage in Premier (available for free for you guys via NYU) if you have experience with it. Here are some other free alternative video editing tools to know about:

DaVinci Resolve Download it here Desktop editor, made by Blackmagic, free with paid upgrades

FFMPEG https://www.ffmpeg.org/ FFmpeg is a free and open-source software project consisting of a large suite of libraries and programs for handling video, audio, and other multimedia files and streams. At its core is the FFmpeg program itself, designed for command-line-based processing of video and audio files. It is widely used for format transcoding, basic editing (trimming and concatenation), video scaling, video post-production effects and standards compliance
