Behind The Mask

I started off my project journey with the idea of pictures of people with their masks on and then masks off and seeing the difference. However, as I was doing this, I thought of an idea of focusing on color in portraits as a theme as well. From there, I moved towards a mosaic style of portrait photography. I took photos of my subject over the course of a few days as he wore different colors. Each day I took a masked and unmasked photo. I wanted to show what is hidden behind a person’s mask and wanted to show this concept by making a mosaic of unmasked photos of the person to produce the masked photo. The monochromatic style of photos were fun to play around with as well as the ability to produce a mosaic out of a few colors. One thing I also noticed in my journey was that people tend to smile when you ask for a photo, but with the mask on their natural pose isn’t necessarily a smile because they know their face is hidden.
